- Marcus, Marcus, Marcus what have you done? I'm sure that you are
- deliberately trying to stir things, but you have raised a few points
- that need to be addressed.
-
- In your first paragraph you seem to think that just because the Prime
- Directive is difficult to enforce, then the Federation should discard
- it and influence every culture and civilization that they encounter.
- Well, just because something is difficult to do, it doesn't mean that
- you just give up. Alot of things that are worthwhile are not easy to
- achieve, but you still strive to achieve them.
-
- Your second comment implied that the Federation should intervene in
- civil wars. Are you crazy?! Let's take the Klingon civil war as an
- example. Federation outposts and colonies would have been attacked by
- the forces of the Duras sister. The Romulans would have sent in
- additional forces to even the odds. The whole situation would have
- escalated and instead of a civil war, it would have been a galactic
- war with millions of people at stake. The same thing would have
- happened had the Federation attempted to stop the Cardassians, and
- let's not forget that the moment the Cardassian occupation was over,
- the Federation did help the Bajorans.
-
- The situation with helping planets facing global devastation is more
- tricky. Although, can I point out that in both examples that you
- quoted help was given. It is not easy to sit back and watch a whole
- civilisation, or indeed a whole planet, be destroyed. In fact, on
- certain occasions intervention has been made ("Pen Pals", "The
- Masterpiece Society", "Homeward" and "Generations") but you only have
- to look at those episodes to see that saving a planet from
- destruction does not always meet with successful results. We have no
- idea of what will be the consequence of our actions. What if one of
- those planets saved bred another Khan, or even worse, another race
- like the Borg? Difficult as it is, we can not intervene even though
- we may want to.
-
- The Prime Directive is not "... a hindrance and a barrier...". It is
- there for a reason. The Federation consistently helps planets both in
- and outside of itself. It doesn't help planets who have not yet
- reached the their technological level, because it is quite clear from
- history that people who are given a power they cannot understand will
- use it to destroy themselves or others. Look at the Classic Trek
- episode "Patterns of Force", or ourselves with nuclear power.
-
- As for Kathryn Janeway, and her attitude towards the Prime Directive,
- watch "Time and Again", "Phage" and "Prime Factors". Her attitude is
- spot on.
